The Backwaters run parallel to the Malabar Coast of Kerala in southern India. The Backwaters are a network of interconnected canals, rivers, lakes and inlets, a labyrinthine system formed by more than 900 km of waterways.
Within the midst of this landscape there are a number of towns and cities, which serve as the start and end points of the backwater cruises. Kumarakom is the gateway to the gorgeous backwaters and lakes of Kerala, with its abundance of superb hideaway retreats and sedate river cruises aboard iconic and traditional houseboats. The area around the village is made up of a cluster of picturesque islands covered in lush vegetation and teaming with aquatic and avian wildlife. A highlight of the region is the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary which covers 14 acres of woodland and is home to a number of bird species such as the kingfisher.

Meandering through the water ways you can appreciate why the Keralan Backwaters were ranked as one of the ’50 destinations of a lifetime’ by the National Geographic Traveller magazine.
