Dambulla stands at the junction of the Colombo–Trincomalee and Kandy–Anuradhapura roads, making it a convenient base for exploring the area. The town centre is marked by a clocktower and makes for a good point of reference, although its difficult to get lost here due to its relative small size. North of the clocktower are the main shops; to the south wholesale market. Famous for its remarkable cave temples, these five magical, dimly lit grottoes are full of statues and decorated with some of the finest murals in the country, offering a picture-perfect snapshot of Sinhalese Buddhist art.
