Leh is located some 11500 feet above sea level and is the capital of kingdom of Ladakh. The town lies in the ancient Indus valley. For centuries, Leh was an important stopover on trade routes along the Indus Valley between Tibet to the east, Kashmir to the west and also between India and China. It makes a great base to visit the many monasteries, chortens and gompas in the surrounding area such as those at Lekir, Alchi, Stok and Thiksey. To visit Leh, you can fly directly from Delhi or the more adventurous ones can choose to reach Leh by road. Best time to visit Leh is from May till September. The first two weeks of September are marked by the annual Ladakh Festival: an opportunity to witness a vibrant display of dancing, local sports, buddhist ceremonies and cultural exhibitions.
