Bandarawela is the second largest city in the Badulla district and is a popular rest spot for anyone visiting the Hill Country. The climate in Bandarawela is mild but yet slightly warmer than some of the higher altitude towns like Haputale. One of the main tourist attractions in Bandarawela is the Dowa Temple which is located just a few kilometres east from Bandarawela, on the road towards Badulla. The temple features a beautifully carved Buddha which is carved into the rock face and stands 4 metres tall.
The temple is a cave shrine also carved into the solid rock and decorated with Sri Lankan Buddhist murals. The temple dates back for more than two millennia. Aside from the temple the rest of Hill Countries best sights including Horton’s Plains National Park and various tea plantations are available for visiting.
