JOURNEY ACROSS NORTH INDIA EXPLORING HISTORY BEHIND THE GREAT INDIAN MUTINY

The events in 1857 led to the bloodiest uprising in parts of India and the very fate of the British Empire hung in the balance. This uprising, quite often referred to as the Indian Mutiny of 1857 or the Sepoy Rebellion, was for many Indians the First War of independence. This time of great upheaval led to the dissolution of the East India company and the creation of the British Raj. This historical journey takes you to sites of importance during the 1857 events. You will explore Delhi, Gwalior, Kanpur, Agra, Lucknow and Jhansi.

 

DAY BY DAY ITINERARY

DAY 1: In transit

Fly to Delhi.

DAY 2: Delhi -

On arrival in Delhi, transfer to your hotel. Afternoon visit to the Parliament House (Viceroy’s House). Overnight stay in Delhi.

DAY 3: Lucknow - Vivanta by Taj

Fly to Lucknow. On arrival, transfer to your hotel. First of three nights in Lucknow.

DAY 4: Lucknow - Vivanta by Taj

Lucknow played a central role during the 1857 mutiny. Located on the banks of River Gomti, Lucknow is home to grand colonial buildings and Muslim monuments. Today with your guide you will visit the key sites of the 1857 mutiny; the ruins of the Residency, Wingfield Park, Christchurch and the Kaisarbagh Palace.

DAY 5: Lucknow - Vivanta by Taj

Today half day sightseeing of the city with your guide visiting Bara Imambara, Rumi Darwaza and the magnificient Hussainabad Imambara with its golden dome.

DAY 6: Gwalior - Usha Kiran Palace

This morning drive to Gwalior enroute visiting Kanpur (former Cawnpore). Kanpur was an important garriston town for the East India Company forces. The siege of Kanpur was a key episode in the Indian Mutiny of 1857. In Kanpur, visit the All Saints Memorial Church, the remains of the Wheeler’s Entrenchment site and Nana Rao Park (the Memorial Well). Later drive to Gwalior. First of three nights in Gwalior.

DAY 7: Gwalior - Usha Kiran Palace

Today morning visit the majestic Gwalior Fort with its many interesting temples and the impressive Man Mandir Palace.

DAY 8: Gwalior - Usha Kiran Palace

This morning visit to the impressive Jhansi Fort. Notable sights in the fort are the Shiva temple, Ganesh temple at the entrance, and the Kadak Bijli cannon used in the uprising of 1857. Later visit to the imposing 17th century Govind Mandir Palace. Evening return to Gwalior.

DAY 9: Agra - Trident

Drive to Agra. Visit the imposing Agra Fort, where a thousand British troop took refuge for four months in 1857 before crossing across the Yamuna river to the tomb of  Itmad-ud-Daula, here thousands. First of two nights in Agra.

DAY 10: Agra - Trident

Sunrise visit to the spectacular Taj Mahal. Continue to Fatehpur Sikri, the city founded in 16th century by Mughal Emperor Akbar and now a UNESCO heritage site.

DAY 11: Delhi -

Drive to Delhi. Afternoon explore New Delhi and its British built administrative buildings. First of two nights in Delhi.

DAY 12: Delhi -

This morning, with your guide visit Old Delhi. This part of the city was founded by the Mughal rulers. A walking tour of Old Delhi takes you to landmarks associated the 1857 mutiny. Later visit to the majestic Red Fort, the main residence of the Mughal Emperors until 1857.

DAY 13: Depart Delhi

Fly back home.
