Jaipur is the capital of the state of Rajasthan and an apex in the popular Golden Triangle route. ‘The Pink City’ as its often referred gets its name from the deep pink lime washed buildings, is the gateway to the state’s other royal cities and the expansive deserts in the west. This vibrant city was found in the 18th century by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, whose creative genius as a renowned astronomer is noticeable in the Jantar Mantar (observatory for movements of sun, stars and planets). The City Palace in the heart of the city is now both a museum and home to the former ruling family. Nearby the multi-storey latticework building, the ‘Hawa Mahal’, Jaipur’s most disctinctive landmark used to act as a screen so that the royal women could observe street festivals without being seen. On the outskirts, perched on top of the Aravali hills is Amber Fort, once home to the Rajput Maharajas and former capital of the state before Jaipur. To conclude your introduction to this city, take a walking tour through the colourful bazaars showcasing the local gem stone jewellery, block printed fabrics and famous woodwork.
