The beautifully sculpted sandstone temples of Khajuraho, listed as Unesco World Heritage site, are amongst the finest temple art in the world. The temples have awed generations of people with their nagara-style architectural symbolism and their erotic sculptures. Most of the surviving temples were built during the Chandela dynasty between the 10th and 12th century. Khajuraho located right in the heart of Central India is believed to have once been the religious capital of the Chandellas. Flying in from Varanasi or Delhi, Khajuraho comes as a good surprise with its clean, quite and well maintained temples. We highly recommend staying either at Lalit View for or Sarai Torai, a tranquil wilderness retreat along the Ken River not far from the town.
