Negombo, is situated on the west coast of Sri Lanka. The close proximity to the international airport, approximately 10 km, makes this an attractive place for most visitors.  Being the fourth largest city in Sri Lanka, there is plenty to see and do here.  For foodies, a visit to the lively fish market is a must, fresh fish landed every day is hauled straight off the boats onto the waiting stalls. For those who simply want to soak in the sun, then the white sandy beaches will be a major attraction. One of the most distinct attractions in Negombo is the Old Dutch Fort. Dating back to the colonial days when Sri Lanka was once under the rule of the Portuguese (early 1500s) and then the Dutch. Along with the fort there are remnants of the old colony with centuries old Portuguese and Dutch houses and various administrative buildings. Another popular attraction in Negombo is the Muturajawela Marshland, which may not sound inviting, but part of the Marshland is the Negombo lagoon covering over 3000 hectares. The protected mangroves of the lagoon are home to over 190 species of wildlife.
